The following table provides a list of common air con problems, the possible causes of the problem and some tips and solutions to resolve the problem. The table is meant to provide you with a general guidance to help you understand your air con problems better so that you know what kind of aircon repair is required to fix the problem.

For minor aircon repair problems, you may be able to resolve them by yourself by referring to the tips and solutions provided in the table. For example, you can easily resolve problems cause by dirty air filter and condensing coil by cleaning them yourself. You can also reset your remote controls and power point yourself to solve some problems if they are the source of the problems.

However, there are many aircon repair which are difficult and dangerous for you to fix them by yourself. As a result, it is better to engage an aircon specialist to help you to troubleshoot for the actual causes and provide the relevant aircon repair solutions accordingly. There are also instances where the aircon repair or replacement cost is not worth paying as it may be the right time for you to replace your old air conditioners with new ones.  When you outsource the aircon repair job, the table will provide you with some ideas on what are the aircon repairs your vendor will be working on to resolve your air conditioning problems.

Indoor or outdoor unit printed circuit board (PCB) is faulty or other components in air conditioning system faulty
  • Repair or replace faulty PCB or components.
Aircon sometimes cold but sometimes not cold Dirty or clogged compressor causing poor heat transfer. This will trigger the safety device to turn off the compressor and on it again automatically when the compressor has cooled down.
  • Clean the compressor.
Under or over charged of refrigerant
  • Adjust the refrigerant to the correct level.
Faulty condenser fan motor
  • Replace faulty parts.
Faulty fan coil or condenser Printed Circuit Board (PCB)
  • Replace PCB.
Ice formed on evaporator coil Most common cause is due to dirty filter
  • Clean and wash filter.
Clogged or dirty evaporator coil restricting air flow to the coil.
  • Chemical cleaning to remove dirt and clogs.
Dirty blower causing poor air flow.
  • Cleaning blower. (Either general servicing or chemical cleaning)
Solenoid valve faulty
  • Replace solenoid
Faulty fan motor
  • Replace fan motor
Low refrigerant level
  • Use pressure gauge to check if the refrigerant charge is low. Check for leakages and repair or replace leaking components. Top up the refrigerant.
Ice forms on the condenser pipe Low gas
  • Top up refrigerant
  • Check the system leakage and repair
Dirty fancoil
  • Chemical cleaning
Indoor blower not rotating but condenser is running
  • Replace defective parts
Remote control not working Remote control is not working or battery is weak
  • Change the remote control battery and test whether it is working
Electronic circuit board or remote control is defective
  • Try the remote control on different fancoil to test whether it is working.
  • Point the remote control LED lamp at the handphone camera and press any button of the remote control. If you see a PINK light shown on the handphone screen. The remote control is still working.
  • If not, repair or replace the board or remote control.
Aircon on and off automatically Power switch (for manually switching on and off the aircon) is faulty
  • Repair or replace the power switch
Indoor fan coil printed circuit board (PCB) is faulty or other components in air conditioning system faulty
  • Repair or replace faulty components
Wrong setting on remote control
  • Reset remote control
Defects in the electronic circuit board that operates the fancoil
  • Repair or replace the Electronic circuit board
Condensation in aircon trunking Mostly likely due to poor quality insulator used or insulator is not thick enough
  • Replace with high quality insulators to reduce risks of condensation in the aircon trunking.
Most common cause is due to dirty filter
  • Clean and wash filter.
Clogged or dirty evaporator coil restricting air flow to the coil.
  • Chemical cleaning to remove dirt and clogs.
Dirty blower causing poor air flow.
  • Cleaning blower. (Either general servicing or chemical cleaning)

Low refrigerant level

Aircon Light is blinking
(note when this problem occurs, your aircon often shuts off too)
There are many reasons that could cause aircon light blinking. The light blink to alert you that your aircon has some problems. Some remote control has error message to inform you where the problem lies.
  • Switch off the circuit breaker of your AC unit, wait for a few seconds, and then switch it on again. If this does not work, check the wiring connection. If there is a loose connection, connect the wire back.
